Field Projects
Heavy civil work across the Western U.S.
Documented fieldwork on remote roads, trails, bridges, and water infrastructure across the Western U.S., executed under federal and public-sector standards.

Completed Project
Bush Loop Accessible Paved Trail Reconstruction
Sequoia National Forest, CA · USDA Forest Service · Completed
CA Mathes Construction rebuilt 0.46 miles of ADA-accessible paved trail through the Freeman Giant Sequoia Grove in Sequoia National Forest. Our crews replaced seven corrugated metal pipe (CMP) culverts, placed new asphalt paving, built an asphalt berm along the trail edges, and finished the surface with a protective seal coat.
Working in a grove of old-growth giant sequoias meant hauling paving and grading equipment up mountain roads, working inside a tight footprint, and protecting the trees, soil, and drainage at every step. The result is a smooth, accessible trail that visitors of all abilities can use to experience the grove.
Scope of work
- Replacement of seven CMP culverts
- ADA-accessible asphalt trail paving
- Asphalt berm construction
- Seal coat application
- Mobilization to a remote mountain site with limited access

Current Project
Work underway
Pine Canyon Barracks Replacement
Los Padres National Forest, CA · USDA Forest Service · Under construction
At the Pine Canyon Fire Station along the Cuyama River, CA Mathes is removing the station’s existing mobile-home barracks and replacing it with a new wildland-urban interface (WUI) fire-rated, four-bedroom barracks unit. Our crew is handling demolition and disposal, regrading and compacting the pad, setting the new unit on piers with seismic tie-downs, and reconnecting power, water, and sewer, all while keeping the fire station in service and the river corridor protected.

Projects we are pursuing
San Bernardino Road Grading & Drainage
San Bernardino National Forest, CA · USDA Forest Service · Bid submitted
Road and drainage maintenance on fifteen native-surface roads across several ranger districts: nearly 61 miles of blading, re-establishing rolling dips and lead-off ditches, and installing seven new overside drains. The rocky, steep terrain calls for bulldozer-based grading rather than a standard motor grader.
Sand Pond Trail Boardwalk
Tahoe National Forest, CA · USDA Forest Service · Bid submitted
Replacement of the accessible boardwalk and a 25-foot trail bridge on the Sand Pond Interpretive Trail, crossing Sardine Creek and an adjoining wet meadow. Our approach carries about 1,060 feet of boardwalk on pinned pier foundations, with no excavation or concrete in the meadow, and sets the new trail bridge on helical piles.

Field Standards
Quality, logistics, and environmental discipline
Remote and protected wilderness sites demand disciplined planning. Our crews manage materials, access, and equipment deployment with safety, quality, integrity, and efficiency as the basis for every task order.
Environmental containment, NEPA-aligned review, and engineering precision guide work in sensitive areas, supporting federal agencies and public partners from design through closeout.
